0Ahead of Barcelona finalizing the transfer of Rodri, Fermin Lopez commented on the influence the midfielder could bring to Camp Nou. The Barca youngster is especially struck by the quality of his fellow Spain international.
Fermin Lopez is preparing positively for the new season after recovering from an injury that caused him to miss the 2026 World Cup. The 23-year-old midfielder recently shared with the Catalan newspaper Diari Ara about the notable changes at Barcelona, with the upcoming arrival of Rodri drawing particular attention.
Lopez holds his Spain teammate in high regard and believes Rodri will have a significant impact on the Barcelona squad. He said: "He is a fantastic player. He has won the Ballon d'Or and is a world champion. I am his teammate in the national team, and in my opinion, he is the best central midfielder in the world. He will bring a lot to us."
Lopez underwent surgery after fracturing a bone in his right foot during the match against Real Betis in May. This injury caused him to miss the 2026 World Cup. Now, the Spanish midfielder has fully recovered and is ready to return, as Barcelona aims to defend their La Liga title and advance deep into the Champions League.
In the upcoming season, Lopez will also have a new look, wearing the number 7 shirt, after giving up the number 16 to Rodri. He shared: "Number 7 is the jersey I have always loved and has been worn by great players in the club's history. Since it was vacant, I asked for it and I am happy to wear it."
The Barcelona midfielder admitted he felt a bit of regret in parting with his old number: "I am a little sad to leave number 16 because I have a special attachment to it after playing for the first team, but I believe it will be given to someone deserving." Besides Rodri, Lopez was also asked about the possibility of Julian Alvarez joining Barcelona.
Lopez praised the Atletico Madrid forward but did not want to go further: "I like him, he is a great player, but ultimately he is an Atletico Madrid player. I cannot say too much about this." He added that Alvarez would fit Barcelona's style of play if the deal happened.
While speculation about Alvarez continues, Rodri is reportedly about to officially join Barcelona from Manchester City for a fee of 65 million pounds. However, the 30-year-old midfielder cannot immediately play as he has just undergone a minor back surgery and is expected to return only in mid-September.
