India withdraws from the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup to prioritize a friendly match against Brazil

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has notified FIFA about its withdrawal from the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, a competition in which the Indian team was grouped with host nation Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. In lieu of that, India has decided to focus on a high-profile exhibition game against Brazil scheduled for October 3.

According to The Times of India on August 13, the AIFF communicated to world football's governing body that the Indian team cannot participate in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup this year. The decision came just one week after the AIFF had announced plans to simultaneously take part in both the FIFA ASEAN Cup and the friendly against Brazil using two separate squads.

The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup is set to kick off on September 24. India was one of the invited teams from outside Southeast Asia and was drawn in a group with Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The group winner will advance to the Division 1 final on October 3, which is the same day India was scheduled to host Brazil in a friendly on home soil.

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey confirmed to The Times of India that the commitment to the Brazilian side is the primary reason India had to pull out of the FIFA ASEAN Cup.

"We are unable to participate in the FIFA ASEAN Cup due to our commitment to the Brazilian Football Confederation," Chaubey stated.

Beyond the scheduling conflict, the AIFF head noted a technical issue: during this international window, each team is allowed to play a maximum of four matches. The AIFF has informed FIFA and explained the rationale behind its decision to withdraw from the tournament.

According to Chaubey, India has faced Singapore and Malaysia four times in the last three years and can still arrange future meetings with Southeast Asian teams. Meanwhile, the opportunity to bring the Brazilian national team to play on Indian soil is extremely rare.

The AIFF President believes that playing against Brazil could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance for many Indian players, and that a match against the five-time World Cup champions would generate massive interest and help promote football nationwide.

Following the withdrawal from the FIFA ASEAN Cup, the match against Brazil in Kolkata is currently the only confirmed friendly for the Indian team during this FIFA window.

However, the AIFF is seeking two additional friendly matches against strong teams with higher FIFA rankings than India.

Chaubey did not disclose the identities of the potential opponents due to confidentiality clauses in the negotiations. The Times of India cited sources indicating that at least one of the teams the AIFF has approached participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

According to the AIFF President, the FIFA ASEAN Cup is an important tournament that attracts significant attention. Although regretting the inability to participate, Indian football wants to make the most of the FIFA calendar by playing high-quality opponents, thereby helping players gain valuable experience. The withdrawal decision may also expose the AIFF to potential penalties.

The Times of India cites Article 5.2 of the FIFA ASEAN Cup regulations, stating that a member association withdrawing from the tournament no later than 30 days before the first match could face a minimum fine of 15,000 Swiss francs (CHF) from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, equivalent to approximately 1.76 million rupees.

However, AIFF officials believe the federation can avoid this fine after explaining the circumstances to FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström in a detailed email. The latest decision marks a significant shift by the AIFF within just one week.

On August 6, following an Executive Committee meeting at the Football House in New Delhi, the AIFF officially announced that India would participate in both the friendly against Brazil and the FIFA ASEAN Cup. At that time, the proposed plan was to use two separate squads for the two events.

Under the initial plan, one Indian team would compete in the FIFA ASEAN Cup in Indonesia from September 24 to October 3, while another contingent would prepare for the match against Brazil in Kolkata on October 3. Just one week later, the AIFF changed course and decided to prioritize the Brazil game.

Thus, India will no longer be part of the group featuring Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup. FIFA will now have to address the issues arising from the invited team's withdrawal.
